What Is Smart DNS Proxy?

Smart DNS Proxy is a DNS-based routing method that redirects selected geo-sensitive requests through proxy endpoints, while most internet traffic continues on your normal connection path. It is primarily used for media access on devices that do not support full VPN clients.

Because it does not encrypt all traffic, Smart DNS is typically faster than a full-tunnel VPN for streaming workloads, but it does not provide the same privacy protections.

How Smart DNS Works

  1. Your device sends DNS queries

Instead of the ISP resolver, your device queries a Smart DNS resolver configured in network settings.

  2. The resolver detects region-sensitive domains

Requests for supported streaming domains are routed through an alternative path that matches target-region requirements.

  3. The rest of your traffic stays local

Only selected domain flows are influenced, which keeps overhead low and usually preserves high playback bitrates.

Basic Smart DNS Proxy Setup

Device TypeWhere to ConfigureTypical Steps
Smart TV / Apple TVNetwork DNS settingsDisable automatic DNS, enter Smart DNS resolver IPs, reboot app
Game ConsoleManual network configurationSet custom DNS, test connection, relaunch media apps
RouterWAN or DHCP DNS settingsSet DNS at router level so all home devices inherit Smart DNS

Smart DNS Proxy vs VPN

Is Smart DNS Proxy faster than a VPN?

In many streaming scenarios, yes. Smart DNS does not wrap all traffic in an encrypted tunnel, so it usually adds less overhead.

Does Smart DNS hide my IP address?

No. Smart DNS modifies DNS resolution behavior for supported domains, but your base connection metadata is not fully hidden the way it is with a VPN tunnel.

Should I configure Smart DNS on the router or device?

Router-level setup is easier for whole-home coverage. Device-level setup offers more granular control when only one or two endpoints need it.
